Clipper Teas, the natural tea company owned by Wessanen UK, is donating £2,500 to the Beaminster Food Bank to support the ‘Community Fridge Project’ and to aid the distribution of Food Bank care packages.

The Beaminster Food Bank, overseen by Beaminster Team Churches and Dorset Town Council, works primarily with local businesses and the community to provide care packages containing fruit, vegetables, fresh meat, toiletries and sanitary products to those that need it in the Beaminster area.

Clipper Teas donation will support the Food Bank’s day-to-day food package operations and will also provide a fridge for the committee’s ‘Community Fridge Project’ launching in 2021.

The project, in collaboration with Beaminster Co-op and Beaminster Town Council, aims to provide an accessible fridge where people can help themselves to food donated by local businesses or growers which is surplus to requirements.

In 2020 alone, the Food Bank has supported 300 households in Beaminster and the surrounding villages, providing food for over 500 people, with each care parcel containing provisions for 5-7 days. Clipper Tea’s donation and the introduction of the Community Fridge Project in 2021 is set to bolster the efforts of the Food Bank and support hundreds more residents.

Andy Stenton, manufacturing director of hot drinks at Clipper Teas said:

This year, we wanted to support our direct local community in these difficult times, hence the Beaminster Food Bank was the immediate choice. With the Clipper Teas factory based in Beaminster, we wanted to have a direct impact on reducing food poverty in the area. The ‘Community Fridge Project’ is a fantastic initiative that will enable better access to food for those in need, while working with local businesses to alleviate food waste – each a strong parallel to our central ethos as a B Corp business.

Reverend Joanna Neary, chair of Beaminster Food Bank Management Committee said:

While many people assume there isn’t a requirement for a food bank in rural areas, financial challenges combined with a global pandemic and job losses means there are people in need. Poverty is often hidden in rural areas and it takes great courage to access a food bank, which is why we are incredibly grateful for Clipper Teas’ generous donation - enabling us to get our Community Fridge Project off the ground in 2021.

The Beaminster Food Bank currently has eleven regular volunteers plus volunteer coordinator, Helen Smith, who works hard to keep the food bank open every Monday and Friday.

Helen Smith, volunteer co-ordinator for Beaminster Food Bank said:

The Beaminster Food Bank is helping right across the community and surrounding villages. Catering for young and old ranging from single people to large families in need. We are very grateful for individuals, groups and Wessanen UK for their generous donations, which means we can now set up a 'Community Fridge' to support our wonderful community.

Clipper Teas

Wessanen-owned Clipper is a different kind of tea company, and a pioneer in ethical, sustainable tea production since 1984.

Clipper believes every cup counts, for both people and the planet. In 1994, it became the UK’s first Fairtrade tea company.  Today, it is the world’s largest buyer of Fairtrade tea, supporting 114,000 producers and their families around the world.  In the last 25 years, Clipper has paid over £4m in Fairtrade premiums, ensuring its tea workers always get a fair deal.

Today, Clipper’s tea factory in Beaminster produces over 1 billion tea bags a year, which are sold in 50 countries worldwide.  Every product is made with natural ingredients, nothing artificial is added.  In 2018, Clipper became the first tea company to make all its heat-sealed tea-bags unbleached, plant-based, non-GM and fully-biodegradable.  Clipper’s factory is carbon neutral and 98% of factory waste is recycled.

Natural, fair and delicious.  That’s the Clipper difference.
